Meteorology, or atmospheric science, is the study of the atmosphere and its interaction with the Earth's surface, oceans and biological systems. Meteorologists seek to describe, understand, and predict weather phenomena that occur on spatial scales ranging from millimeters to thousands of kilometers, and on time scales ranging from microseconds to thousands of years or more. These phenomena range from localized thunderstorms and tornadoes to regional frontal systems and hurricanes to global climate change. The main scientific areas of research in meteorology today include weather, climate and their interactions. This includes the study and prediction of severe and dangerous weather events that heavily affect life and property. These events include, but are not limited to, lightning, tornadoes, floods, hail, blizzards, dense fog and hurricanes. Research activities relating to climate and weather-climate interactions include the study of past climates, regional climate, surface processes and boundary layers, climate change and seasonal forecasts. The Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (IMH) at the University of Queensland (UQ) is actively involved in research on all of the topics mentioned above.

We are named a world leader in severe storm, medium-scale and radar research in a recent external study over the past few years. The role and mission of the Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (IMH) at the Queensland University (UQ) is to improve meteorological and hydrological services and to help promote awareness of the benefits of these services for the economic well-being of the countries of the Republic of Haiti. This objective is achieved through training, research and surveys, as well as the provision of specialized services and advice for the Haitian community.

To provide facilities for the training of various categories of meteorological and hydrological personnel

Provide advice to participating governments on meteorological and hydrological issues in Haiti and the Caribbean community.
Collect, analyze and publish meteorological and hydrological data for Haiti and the Caribbean.
